Astronaut

So one day, I walk into the room and see Paul like this:

and I was horrified..."Paul! What are you doing with our trashcan on your head?!?!?!"

He says, "Oh, this? (pointing to the trashcan) I'm pretendin' to be an astronaut!"

Sights of Quiapo

Stan, Sandy, and I, along with some of Stan's officemates, went to the dibidee capital of the Philippines---Quiapo. Check out some of the pictures I took (from the car, which is why I needed to make them small---you will detect movement if they're full-size) with the new macro lens we got from Mayer.

I wanted to take pictures of the vendors who sold herbal stuff by the church but Stan said it wasn't a good idea...might get mugged! It was a fun experience, though!

Christmas!

family

This picture was taken during the Christmas dinner at Dad and Mom's. We had turkey dinner (felt a bit more like Thanksgiving...hahahaha!), with the usual fruit salad. Two children in tow makes it a lot more difficult to enjoy the company and food, but I had fun, nevertheless.

I've grown up in a small family...now that we're bigger, it does seem a lot fun!

Happy holidays, everyone!

The Consumer : Leak-proof cloth diapers

WE received this interesting e-mail from two enterprising friends, Jen CC Tan and Ella Ampongan, who are engaged in the sale and production of cloth diapers.

They announced they had come up with a new line of fabric diapers which, unlike traditional ones, were leak-proof and dry. The main objection to cloth diaper is that it gets easily saturated with liquid. It also leaks and gets the baby and crib all wet.

"My friend and I are now producing better cloth diapers here in the Philippines," Tan explained in her e-mail. The new diapers, according to her, were lined with fleece, which absorb all the liquid. Called Tushy Wushy, the diapers come in different sizes and colors such as red, yellow, blue and army green.

Tan said cloth diapers were more economical, healthier for the baby and better for the environment.

She added, "We believe we should all do our share in [protecting the] environment for the sake of our children... we'd [also] like our babies' [skin] to touch materials that are chemical-free."
Readers who want to know more about cloth diapers can e-mail Tan at jencctan@gmail.com, or call business partner Ella at 0917-5325643.

Maynilad responds

Dulce M., a resident of Gamban Street, Pasay City, sent us this desperate plea: "Please call the attention of Maynilad regarding the [dark-colored and smelly] water coming out of our faucets. We have repeatedly called Maynilad. The repairmen who came here didn't fix the problem.
"Please help us [get] Maynilad [to look at the problem in] our neighborhood in Barangay 138, Zone 15. We hope they will not use the holidays as an excuse not to solve our water problem."
(We talked to Maynilad's customer service officer who asked for a copy of the complaint. The officer said he would personally call the attention of the officer-in-charge of Maynilad's Pasay branch.)

SSS bonus

Social Security System chief executive officer Corazon de la Paz assured SSS pensioners recently that their 13th month pension, or Christmas bonus, would be released in time for Christmas.
De la Paz also reminded pensioners about the need to confirm annually their eligibility for benefits. "Avoid temporary suspension of your pension by confirming your entitlements once you receive an official notice from SSS," she said.

There are several ways to reconfirm eligibility. A handicapped pensioner can request for a home visit by an SSS representative. Or a pensioner can simply respond to the SSS letter, or send a certification that he/she is alive and eligible to receive pension.

The certification can be endorsed by: a regular SSS employee who has been with the institution for at least five years; a teller in the bank where pensioner has an account; the local postman or a barangay chair.

De la Paz said the procedure was part of the Annual Confirmation of Pensioners program to delete from the roster of beneficiaries those who have died, remarried or recovered from their disabilities.

We wish our fellow consumers a Merry Christmas!

Genius

Paul: Mom, what's a genius?
Me: Sweetie, a genius is someone who's really smart.
Paul: Oh, I must be a genius then, I know all the instruments.
Me: (thought bubble) Ah...okay...anak ni Stanley Tan, apo ni Alex Tan talaga itong batang ito. They cannot deny it!!!!!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!

Paul's Quips

SCENE: Towards the end of dinner; only Paul, MIL and I on table--

Paul: Mommy, when I'm an adult already, will you be an old woman or dead na?
Me: Uh...hopefully, old woman pa lang.

MIL: Paul, am I an old woman or a young woman?
Paul (paused for a moment and thought): Oh, not so old, not so young!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

I'm trying to be a photographer

Stan and I were discussing the other night that it would be great if we could go do Simbang Gabi, as these masses would be really great photo opportunities. Wonder if we can get up that early!

Anyway, I've opened another account on Flickr to *ahem* showcase the pictures I've taken (hahahaha!). If you guys are not busy, check out this link: www.flickr.com/photos/jencc628.

I actually have a few pictures but will be practicing more soon.

Food Picture

I was reading the "photographing food" portion of The Encyclopedia of Photography: An A-To-Z Visual Directory, With an Inspirational Gallery of Finished Works by Adrian Davies. It said to focus on an interesting part of the dish while blurring out the other areas (his sample was a pasta dish, where he focused on the mint leaf and the prawns sticking out). Well, I really didn't know which was the most interesting part of this dish (perhaps it was because I was hungry!) and focused on the dips.

Looks like I need more practice, huh?

Paul's orchestra

Check this out! Paul is so into music now. He knows so many instruments! I got him The Encyclopedia of Music by Wade-Matthews & Thompson from my friend who has an online auction site: www.avalon.ph at a steal!!!

He's been reading the book, and knows the differences among the instruments. Here's his drawing of an orchestra! I've labeled it so you guys can tell what the instruments are.

Paul's Journal

On the 28th of November, I had Paul begin writing in his journal. We've had that journal since last year but I was the one writing on it for him (he just dictated what to write down). Now, since he knows how to write, we scribble something each day before we go to bed. Here are the three entries he so far has.

This is the Christmas tree that Candy made for Paul last year. I made sure that the lights weren't blinking when I took this picture. Used night mode, I think...(I'm never gonna make it as a photographer, I can't even remember what mode I took this in!)

Tummy2Tummy

Hey, guess what? This artsy photo that Stan took of Kevin and I got chosen to be included in a babywearing DVD! I'd say check out Tummy2Tummy but then the only picture you'll see there is a watermark/background of us. We're on the back cover. BUT!!! In the DVD, they've put our picture in two great locations: the menu of the DVD and at the end credits! Woohoo! Kevin and I are in an international video!!
